Berrigan is situated within the Murray Region of New South Wales.

Berrigan offers a quiet, rural atmosphere with a nostalgic feel, but it takes on a carnival atmosphere with the running of the Berrigan Gold Cup horserace.

History

The first European settlers in the vicinity were small farmers who farmed sheep and wheat from the 1870s onwards. The township grew up around the Berrigan Hotel, which opened in 1888. You can still get a drink there today.

Things to do

Tour local wineries and taste their produce at the cellar door.

Check out ‘The Drop’, part of a large water-flow control system which allows water to divert from Mulwala Canal into the Berrigan Channel.

Explore the Murray River or Lake Mulwala, both just half an hour's drive away.

Events

The Berrigan Gold Cup in November offers a fabulous picnic atmosphere.

The annual District Show is held in October.

Don’t miss

A game of golf on the town’s golf course.

A wander around town to see the old post office, the Federal Hotel and Memorial Hall – highlights of the main street.
