Regional NSW offers an abundance of business opportunities and a relaxed lifestyle. With a population of more than 2,519,000, regional NSW covers 800,000 sq km. Regional NSW offers a range of geography and climates, from the humid coastal environment of the north, to the semi-arid desert in the west, and the alpine peaks and sheep-wheat belt of the south. This diversity encourages a variety of industries to flourish.
The Department of State and Regional Development (DSRD) works with businesses and communities in regional NSW to help them grow and create local jobs.
Industries
The State's traditional manufacturing, mining and agribusiness activities have provided a firm foundation for diversification into high-growth areas such as aquaculture, biotechnology, viticulture and communications.
Infrastructure
All regional centres provide the full amenities and utilities of larger cities including mobile telephone and broadband internet access.
Electricity, natural gas and water are readily available throughout the State for business and commercial use. Residential and commercial real estate is cost competitive.
Transport
An extensive road and rail network connects regional and production centres to Australia's main metropolitan areas and transport hubs. A number of regional centres act as distribution and warehousing hubs for interstate and intrastate freight movement.
NSW's five ports are located at Sydney, Port Kembla, Newcastle, Eden in the far south, Yamba in the far north, and they service vessels from many international shipping lines.
Freight and passenger air services are available from most cities and towns throughout regional NSW.
Labour
Many highly qualified and skilled people live in regional NSW. The skills base covers the spectrum of business activity, from manufacturing to agriculture, and from technology to business and community services.
Regions
In addition to Sydney, the State is divided into 13 business regions:
West:
North:
South:
East (adjacent to Sydney):

Business Expansion and Relocation
The New South Wales Department of State and Regional Development (DSRD) provides a range of business investment and development programs to assist the business in NSW regions.
Regional Business Development Scheme
The Regional Business Development Scheme offers financial and other assistance to businesses expanding in, or relocating to, regional NSW. The DSRD Business Development Managers are available to:
- help potential investors identify and develop commercial opportunities in regional NSW
- assist businesses wanting to relocate to the State's regions
- assist regional firms to expand and find new markets
- help firms to diversify and add value to products.
Hunter Advantage Fund
The Hunter Advantage Fund is a NSW Government initiative to create additional sustainable employment in the Hunter region.
The level of assistance provided for a project from the Hunter Advantage Fund is based on the number of people it employs. However, other factors such as the value of the capital invested, the benefit to the region and its compatibility with the region's strategic development is also considered.
The aim of the Hunter Advantage Fund is to stimulate investment that will generate new jobs in the local government areas of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens. The Department may provide assistance towards:
- costs in establishing new job-generating investment
- infrastructure costs
- payroll tax, land tax and stamp duty relief.

Illawarra Advantage Fund
The NSW Government created the Illawarra Advantage Fund to attract new industries to the Illawarra and boost current business in the region. The fund aims to create long-term, sustainable jobs in the Illawarra.
The fund provides a range of assistance to eligible businesses looking to establish or expand in the Illawarra region. Assistance is flexible, but geared to securing growth or investment that is unlikely to occur without some up-front assistance to overcome constraints to the project proceeding.
Assistance may include a contribution towards:
- costs incurred in establishing a new job-generating business
- costs from substantial expansion of the workforce of an existing business
- external infrastructure costs incurred in establishment or expansion
- payroll tax, land tax or stamp duty concessions
- the cost of engaging external expertise to help implement a job-generating project
- project facilitation and coordination services.

New Market Expansion Program for Regional Enterprise
This program assists regional firms to develop the confidence and skills to pursue and take up new markets, and break the cycle of dependence on traditional markets and/or local economies.
As part of the program, regular Travelling Expert Tours are held in regional centres and towns. The tours brief small and medium-size firms on current business issues and trends so they are better prepared to take up new opportunities.
