If you are thinking of moving to a country or regional area, it’s important that you sit down and make a few basic decisions. There are many questions you need to answer before you make the move. The following checklist may help.

  • Do we want to live on the coast, inland, outback or on a mountain?
  • Do we want to live in a climate that is temperate or tropical?
  • Do we have a preference for dry heat or an area that is more humid?
  • Do we want to live in a town or on a property?
  • Do we want to live in a large or small town?
  • Do we want a large garden, land for subsistence farming or land for agricultural pursuits?
  • Do we want to find a job, start a business, transfer our existing business, or retire?
  • Do we need to be within driving distance of a city, near an airport, or near a rail network?
  • Do we want to encourage visitors? What transport networks service the area?
  • What services do we need now and in the future?
  • Have we visited the area or areas we are interested in?
  • Have we done a budget?
  • Have we had our home valued?
  • Consult a Real Estate agent for advice on what your proerty is worth to sell or rent
  • Consult a Financial Planner or an Accountant for Budgeting and also to provide advice on if you should sell or rent your present property

Relocation Advice

Preperation

As in most things, preparation is the name of the game.  In most cases your degree of success in relocating will be measured by the amount and quality of research you do before making that final decision.

Here’s a checklist of some of the things you should consider:

  • Choose a location in which you and your family will be happy to live.  Starting up a business in a new location can often be stressful enough without the added burden of an unhappy partner or children at home
  • Think about schools, health care facilities, climate and the cultural aspects of the area.

Do Your Homework

  1. Check out real estate prices.  Is it best to rent, lease, buy or build?  Here we are talking about both your home and your business premises.  Do comparison costs for all options and also for the different locations you are considering.
  2. Make sure your premises have the right location for the type of business you run.
  3. Obtain all the right IT and telecommunication information.  Have your business on the internet.
  4. If transport is an important part of your business, ensure that all the links are in place so that you will be adequately serviced.
  5. Is there a suitable labour force living within travelling distance of your preferred site?  Talk with local employment agencies about the skill levels you require, and the availability of training assistance.
  6. Talk to others who have made the move before you.  If possible draw on their experiences so that you may avoid some of the problems they encountered.
  7. Quickly become a part of the local community.  Join your local Chamber of Commerce and become a part of service and sporting clubs.
  8. Talk to the economic development unit at the various Councils.
  9. Make contact with the Local office of the Department of State and Regional Development to ascertain if any assistance is available.
  10. Do a budget for the project and run it past your Accountant and Bank.
